Reflection & Investigation (05/01/21)

For today's remote learning day, I have focused on investigating and researching a subject area based on my design ideas, structural response to the Journey. I have also watched the provided presentation based on research methodology, which I have briefly taken notes while watching (image supplied). I had also done some mind mapping as a warm-up before I started my investigation. I've started my research by exploring a Mexican Architect company called Rojkind Arquitectos. I had got the first time I discovered their work which was the interior design of their project 'Tori Tori', when my lecturer showed the first introductory presentation for the Journey's primer. They became one of the best architecture companies I ever discovered within my study; it was very breathtaking for me with their fascinating designs. I have decided to use their works as an inspiration for this project because the Journey that I have done for my primer task has quite similar strategies to their designs with a modern feel. Secondly, I have discovered another Architecture company while browsing called Foster + Partners, which had a similar concept of art with Rojkind; they had different design ideas, and the 3D texture stood out within the city landscape background. Thirdly, I have discovered another Architecture company called Make Architects, and they had one design called 'GDH Nansha' that was pleasing to observe. After all the research that I've done with these Architecture companies, I have found uniqueness in their design. It's been one of my dreams also to achieve that level of designing using my artistic expressions. I've found two books about structure and architecture, which I have quickly look through them to enhance my knowledge about this subject. The first book, called 'Structure and Architecture. 2nd ed.', published in 2001, by Angus J Macdonald. On 'Chapter 1. The relationship of structure to building', I would like to share the following statement "The surfaces which form the envelope, that is the walls, the floors and the roof of the building, are subjected to various types of loading: external surfaces are exposed to the climatic loads of snow, wind and rain; floors are subjected to the gravitational loads of the occupants and their effects; and most of the surfaces also have to carry their own weight (Fig. 1.1). All of these loads tend to distort the building envelope and to cause it to collapse; it is to prevent this from happening that a structure is provided. The function of a
structure may be summed up, therefore, as being to supply the strength and rigidity which are required to prevent a building from collapsing. More precisely, it is the part of a building which conducts the loads which are imposed on it from the points where they arise to the ground underneath the building, where they can ultimately be resisted." this statement has been explaining about the parts of the building and also relates to safety about how the materials could carry each other. I think this relates to my developmental ideas by my ability to build my design with the caution of balancing the weight of materials and preventing the building from collapsing, making sure it is stable.

The second book that I've found called 'Structure as Architecture a Source Book for Architects and Structural Engineers. 1st ed.', published in 2005, by Andrew W. Charleson. In Chapter 7. Structural Detailing, I want to share the following statement. "The design concept should drive detailed design. Before attending to the specifics of structural details a designer should begin by revisiting his or her concept and interrogating it. How might it inform detailing decisions? Only then is it possible to achieve an architecture where all its structural members are integrated with all the other architectural elements and work together towards achieving the design concept." the reason that I wanted to share this statement is that it is very interesting that it mentions about teamwork and also paying close attention to detail when forming a project. I believe this also benefits and relates to my investigation due to my developmental design and how I could apply this information for this project. Besides, I loved the following quote that's been shared within the Chapter 7 page "As Louis Khan writes: A building is like a human. An architect has the opportunity of creating life. It's like a human body – like your hand. The way the knuckles and joints". I want to conclude that I have gained enough knowledge and motivation to design my model in the next upcoming few sessions.
